Joseph's father was John Crosland Snr and his mother was Anne Royd. He had four brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Charles, John, Luke, Titus, Sarah, Alice, Hellen and <child>.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
