Joseph was born on June 16th, 1810 in Birstall and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1810 in Batley.1  Joseph's father was George Crosland and his mother was Mary Cowling. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, George, Abraham and Martha.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died before 1869.
