Benjamin's father was Joshua Hopkinson and his mother was Martha Ainley. His maternal grandparents were Charles Crosland and Mary Ainley. He was an only child.

- in 1841, Benjamin Crosland (aged 4) was at Sunny Bank, Golcar with Ann Lunn (5) and James Lunn (20) and Edward and Louisa Crosland (24 & 25) as neighbours. He was still there in 1851, so not the boy born about 1840 with grandparents in 1851.
  
  In 1851, Benjamin was aged 11, grandson, living with Charles and Mary at Haigouse Hill, Longwood
