Sarah was born in June 1837 in Huddersfield.1  Sarah's father was John Crossland and her mother was Grace Thompson. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Edmund, John, Ann, Grace and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
