John was born in May 1844 in Yorkshire and his baptism took place in May 1844 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1 2  John's father was John Crossland and his mother was Grace Thompson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Edmund, Ann, Grace, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
