Mary was born in September 1852 in Huddersfield.1  Mary's father was Edward Crosland and her mother was Martha Gill.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Mary (Mercy) Beaumont. She had a brother named John.  She was the younger of the two children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Benjamin, James, Edward, Louisa and Arabella.  She died at the age of 62 in 1914 in New Zealand.
