John was born in December 1850 in Huddersfield.1  John's father was Edward Crosland and his mother was Martha Gill.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Mary (Mercy) Beaumont. He had a sister named Mary.  He was the older of the two children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Benjamin, James, Edward, Louisa and Arabella.
