Norris was born in 1861 in Lindley.1  Norris' father was Alfred Crosland and his mother was Sarah Ann Drake.  His paternal grandparents were Beaumont Crosland and Sarah (Sally) Brook. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Beaumont, Zachariah, Mary and Harriet.  He was the second oldest of the six children.

‌Norris and Emma were married in a civil ceremony in June 1887 in Huddersfield.2  They had a son and a daughter, named Alfred and Hilda.  There are no more children.
