John was born in December 1856 in Lindley.1  John's father was Alfred Crosland and his mother was Sarah Ann Drake.  His paternal grandparents were Beaumont Crosland and Sarah (Sally) Brook. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Norris, Beaumont, Zachariah, Mary and Harriet.  He was the oldest of the six children.
