George was born in 1879 in Blackpool.¹ George's father was Joseph Crosland and his mother was Rosanna Haynes. His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Sarah Shaw. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joe, Sarah, Rosa, Lily and Violet. He was the second oldest of the six children.
