Sarah was born in 1876 in Blackburn.¹ Sarah's father was Joseph Crosland and her mother was Rosanna Haynes. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Sarah Shaw. She had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Joe, Rosa, Lily and Violet. She was the oldest of the six children.
