Joe was born in 1893 in Blackpool.¹ Joe's father was Joseph Crosland and his mother was Rosanna Haynes. His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Sarah Shaw. He had a brother and four sisters, named George, Sarah, Rosa, Lily and Violet. He was the youngest of the six children.
