James' father was Daniel Crosland and his mother was Mary Kinder. His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Crosland and Betty Liversidge; his maternal grandparents were William Kinder and Sarah Taylor. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Charles, Elizabeth, Lucy, Hannah and Mary. He had an adopted brother named Edward. He died at the age of 79 in June 1886 in Huddersfield.³

  There are three possible Bradford marriages:
  1824 James (weaver) & Elizabeth Pollard
  1830 James (cloth drawer) & Mary Clegg
  1830 James (no town) & Hannah Cock
  
  Of the 5 marriages (above), Mary and Hannah are likely, and since the 1851 census shows James born Berry Brow with Hannah, this is therefore assumed to be the correct marriage, but which Hannah? Is must be Hannah Cock, as the census shows us that the James Crosland and Hannah Lockwood couple (m.1822) were born about 1800.
