Martha's father was James Crosland and her mother was Mary Sanderson. Her paternal grandparents were John Crosland Jnr and Ellen Firth. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, James, Valentine, Charles, Hannah, Mary and Ruth. She was the youngest of the eight children.
