James' father was James Crosland and his mother was Mary Sanderson.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland Jnr and Ellen Firth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Valentine, Charles, Hannah, Mary, Ruth and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 67 in December 1847 in Delph.  He was buried on December 23rd, 1847.²
