John was born on November 30th, 1809 in Holmfirth and his christening took place on December 26th, 1809 in Wesleyan (Holmfirth).1  John's father was Daniel (Dan) Crosland and his mother was Mary Wagstaff. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, George, Jonathan, Joseph, Joshua and Lydia.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
