James was born in 1805 in Holmfirth and his baptism took place there on May 27th, 1805.1  James' father was Daniel (Dan) Crosland and his mother was Mary Wagstaff. He had five brothers and a sister, named George, John, Jonathan, Joseph, Joshua and Lydia.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
