Joseph was born on March 25th, 1817 in Holmfirth and his christening took place on May 25th, 1817 in Wesleyan (Holmfirth).1  Joseph's father was Daniel (Dan) Crosland and his mother was Mary Wagstaff. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, George, John, Jonathan, Joshua and Lydia.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
