James was born in 1845 in New York.1   James' father was William Crosland and his mother was Dorothy Kay.  His paternal grandparents were George Crosland and Mary Cowling; his maternal grandparents were William Kay and Ellen Varley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Joseph, Charles, Mary and Mary.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died in USA.
