George was born in June 1846 in Cowcliffe.1  George's father was Joseph Crosland and his mother was Sally Mann Rushworth.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Mary Wilkinson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Joe, Mary, Matilda, Phoebe, Sarah, Sarah and Phoebe.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
