John was born in December 1853 in Huddersfield.1  John's father was Joseph Crosland and his mother was Sally Mann Rushworth.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Mary Wilkinson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named George, Joe, Mary, Matilda, Phoebe, Sarah, Sarah and Phoebe.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
