Joseph's father was John Crosland Jnr and his mother was Hanah Breadly.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland Snr and Anne Royd. He had three brothers named William, Jonathan and Thomas.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers named James, Stephen and Charles.

‌Joseph and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on April 25th, 1759 in Almondbury by Vicar Edward Rishton and witnessed by William Crosland & Joseph Kaye.¹
