Morland was the youngest son of Samuel Hennis and Matilda Swallow. Matilda when Morland was born. Morland then was raised by his two sisters (Jane and Elizabeth [Libby]) going back and forth between their homes. In the 1900 census, Morland is listed as living in Cadiz Ohio with the Chandler family both as a servant and a student attending school. It is believed the Chandlers were related to Jane. Others living in the same household were Heity Chandler (b1868), Annie Chandler (b1874) and Elsie Chandler (b1898). None of the rest of his brothers and sisters are listed in that area. In the 1910 census, he is listed as a roomer with John J. Azulian. He once worked as a driver for the A&P tea company when they were a home grocery delivery company. He retired from the coal mines. Morland suffered from severe rheumatism in his old age and committed suicide due to this affliction.

Came to Southampton, Long Island, NY in 1640 w/wife Jane Bond Ogden, son JOhn, and twins David and Jonathan. Was a leader among settlers in founding the town. Later moved to Stamford, CT, Hempstead, Long Island, back to Southampton, and in 1665 was a founder of Elizabethtown, NJ. In 1673 he was acting Governor of East Jersey. His son, David, was a "stone church builder." David's wife, Elizabeth Swaine was first married to her cousin Josiah Ward. When the Bradford colonists came to Newark she is said to be the first to land. (The Ogden Family in America Elizabethtown, NJ Branch, compiled by William Ogden Wheeler 1907). In 1644 JOhn was one of the patentees of Hempstead, LI, uner the Dutch. Was elected freeman 3/31/1650 and Magistrate October 7, 1650 and again in 51, 57, and 61 in Southampton. Represented Sothampton at the General Court in 1659 and sat in the Upper House in 1661. Gov Philip Carteret appointed him Justice of the Peace for the "Province of New Jersey" and Deputy Governor. On 5/26/1668 he was chosen Burgess.
