Tobias was born on May 30th, 1790 in Monongalia County, (W)VA.  Tobias' father was John E. Haught and his mother was Catherine Croushour.  His paternal grandparents were Peter B. Haught (Sr.) and Anna Barbara Hiel; his maternal grandparents were Nicholas Croushour and Elisabeth Crislip. He had four brothers and a sister, named Jacob Henry, John E. Jr., Nicholas, Peter and Ann Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
