Sir John was born about 1225 in Thorpe, Lincolnshire, England.  Sir John's father was Sir William Skipwith and his mother was Alice Thorpe.  His paternal grandfather was Sir Reginald Skipwith; his maternal grandfather was John Thorpe.  He was an only child.
