Joseph was born on November 13th, 1628 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. Joseph's father was William Phelps and his mother was Mary Ann Dover. His paternal grandparents were William Phelps and Dorothy James. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Cornelius, Timothy William, Mary, Sarah and Mary. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers named William, Samuel and Nathaniel.General Notes
