Nicholas was born about 1790 in Monongalia County, (W)VA.  Nicholas' father was John E. Haught and his mother was Catherine Croushour.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Sr. Haught and Anna Barbara Heil; his maternal grandparents were Nicholas Croushour and Elisabeth Crislip. He had four brothers and a sister, named Jacob Henry, John E., Tobias, Peter and Ann Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
