His paternal grandparents were Hans Michael Stocker and Maria Remp. He had six brothers and six sisters, named John, George, Adam, Jacob, Henry, Andreas, Maria Catherine, Anna Margaretha, Anna Maria, Maria Barbara, Nancy Catherine and Eva Christine. He was the third oldest of the thirteen children.-
