1 Oct 1815, Samuel Mather, a Fuller, Bachelor, married Alice Greenhalgh, a spinster at St Mary the Virgin, Bury.  Witnesses were James Milnes and Thomas Crompton.

In 1841, Samuel, 45 (and Alice, 45), recorded as a Fuller when John was born. Fuller, a worker who cleanses wool through the process of fulling.  They lived at Cresent Row, North Bury and in 1841 had 6 children.

WARNING: There's another Samuel Mather who was an Iron Moulder with sons William, Ralph and George.

Robert was the oldest son (20) at home in 1841, a Fuller Miller.

In 1890, Robert Mather was living at 336 & 338 Bury New Road, Pilkington (leashold house over 60 years)

He did not marry Ann Goodall in Middleton in 1850.  That was another Robert Mather, son of Samuel, both (coal) Miners.  There's also another Robert, son of James Mather who married Mary Sharples in 1878, who was also born 1818.
1820 - 1900 Mary Mather 79 79 30 Aug 1841, William son of John Kay bot Manufacturers, married Mary Mather, daughter of Samuel Mather a Miller.  Both were living in Oldham.

After mary married, then lived in Walmersley, Bury (not to be confused with Walmsey, 10 miles West)

1833 Sarah Mather On 12 April 1854, George Hayhurst (24), a Tinner, son of Thomas Hayhurst a mechanic married Sarah Mather (21), daughter of Robert Mather a Fuller. 1838 Alice Mather Aged 2 in 1841, and birth record confirms mother's maiden name GREENHALGH, so a late arrival! 1809 - 1889 Grace Wood 80 80 Robert was with parents in 1841, and Grace was missing.

When son Robert died aged 2, the mother was Mary, so was Grace called Mary?

In 1871 (after Robert had died), Grace (61) had daughters Emma (23), Grace (18) and Ann Jackson (28) with her.
1836 Edwin Mather 26 Sep 1858, Edwin Mather (22), Fuller son of Robert married Jane Ann Barlow (20) of Bury, daughter of George Shaw, Blacksmith at St Mary's, Bury.

In 1871, Edwin and Jane Ann Mather (23 & 23) had Emma (2) and Eleanor (1mo).
1838 Mary Mather 18 May 1858, Mary Mather (19) of Bury, daughter of Robert Mather a Fuller married John Ashworth Nuttall (22) a mechanic of Oldham Road, son of Edmund Nuttall, a Shoe Maker at  St Chad, Rochdale.

In 1857 Mary adopted Elizabeth A Nuttall, born Bury.
1840 - 1900 Betty Mather 60 60 1 Sep 1861, Richard Shaw (21), Weaver from Bury son of John Shaw a weaver married Betty Mather (21) of Bury, daughter of Robert Mather a Fuller at St Paul, Bury, Lancashire.  Witnesses were Edwin Mather and ; Mary Ann Shaw. 1842 - 1917 Hannah (Ann) Mather 75 75 18 Jul 1857, Ann daughter of Robert Mather married Richard Yates (son of William Yates) at Holcombe. This is another.

In 1866, Ann Mather married John Henry Jackson at Bury.

In 1871, Ann "Jackson" (Wid, 28) was with her mother Grace Mather (61) ans two sisters at North Bury

In 1881, Ann Jackson (38) was still with her mother Grace (71) and Emma (33)
1845 Robert Mather 1847 - 1927 Emma Mather 79 79 Emma Mather lived with her mother Grace untill her mother died in 1889.

In 1911, Emma was Head, Single,  63 at 16 Eden Street, Bury with two boarders.

1849 Alice Wood Mather 1769 John Mather John (assumed brother of Robert) had daughter Mary buried at Walmserley in 1800.  Both had daughters buried there (the only Mather burials at Walmersley), making them likely brothers. 1852 Grace Mather 1767 - 1847 Judith (Judy) Chadwick 80 80 Judy when Leah was baptised in 1805, but typically named Judith in official documents. 1807 - 1868 Robert Mather 60 60 Robert married Grace Wood at Middleton, but which Robert? 

From 1837, Robert and Grace had their childrens births registered at Birtle, North Bury (and also Heywood for Betty and Holcombe for Hannah).

In 1841, Robert and Grace (30 & 34) were at Gigg (or Higg), Heywood, North Bury with 6 children.

In 1851, Robert and Grace (43 & 41) were at North Bury with 9 children.

In 1861, Robert and Grace (53 & 51) were at Mill Crofy, N. Bury. They had 7 children with them.

1836-1846, Richard mand Christopher were baptised at Ashworth , St James near Birtle.  Before that the family may have been at Rochdale (tbc).

In 1841, Richard and Mary (35 & 40) were living at Top of the Wood, Birtle with 5 children; Hannah (13), Mary (11), Betty (5), Richard (3) and Christopher (1). Susannah was missing.

In 1851, Richard and Mary (47 & 53) were living at Birtle with 6 children.

In 1861, Mary was Married and Head, still living in Birtle. Richard was missing

1812 - 1885 Judith (Lucy) Mather 73 73 29 Apr 1840, before they were married, Judith Mather of Pigslee had twins Alice and Judith Mather by John Schofield of Deeply Vale.  They were baptised the same day at Christ Church, Walmersley.

3 Oct 1841 John and Judith were married at Rochdale. 

In 1851, John and "Lucy" were at Heap with daughter Sarah (8).

1801 - 1810 Francis Mather 9 9 1805 Leah Mather 1796 - 1798 Leah Mather 2 2 1798 Sally Mather No matching Marriage or Death for Sally (or Sarah) Mather 1790 - 1861 Patience Mather 71 71 Patients never married.  She was a F.S. in 1841 (aged 50) at Hampson Mill for William Chadwick (55), a cotton manufacturer.

In 1851, Patients (66) was a domestic servant in Bury.

She was boarding in Bury in 1861, aged 70.  She never married.
1814 James Greenwood 1819 William Kay In 1851, William, a Woolern Manucacturer, and Mary Kay (32 & 30) were living at Burrs, Walmersley, (North Bury) with John (9), Esther (6), Samuel (3)and Mary (1) 1766 - 1846 Robert Madther 80 80 Robert shown as a Fuller on Patient's baptism of 1790.  His father (also Robert) was also a Fullter.

WARNING: There is another Robert Mather of Withnell of same age who married Peggy Duerden at Leyland.

25 Dec 1846 Robert Mather of Pigslee, Walmersley was buried at Bury.
1837 - 1887 Susannah (Sarah) Mather 50 50 In 1841, Sarah, aged 5 was with Samuel and Alice in North Bury.

Susannah (43), unmarried daughter was with her parents in 1861 and 1881.  However in 1771 the census entry was corrected to "wid", and also with her parents.
1813 - 1877 Samuel Mather 63 63 In 1841, Samuel and Ann (both 25) were at Cresent Row, North Bury with Elizanbeth (5) and Sarah (2).  Also present was Elizabeth Jump (20) and her son James (1), who dont appear to be related or James born locally.

In 1851, Samuel and Ann (37 & 38) were with 5 daughters.
1809 - 1893 Robert (Thomas) Mather 84 84 Robert from Pendleton, son of John and Ann. Pendleton is NE of Blackburn so well North of Bolton and our Mather family.

Robert is a bit of a mystery.  In 1851 he recorded his name as Thomas, although wife and all the children's names  match.

1841 in Salford, Calico Printer with Mary Ann, both age 30 (rounded), with Thomas (13), Julia (11), Harriet (6), John (4), and Robert (2).

1848 in the Salford court for Larceny, aged 36 – ok, that sounds like our lot.

1851-1881 in Salford (“Thomas” in 1851) with Mary Ann, Journeyman Calico Printer.  1861,71 records also show with Mary Ann and Mechanical Calico Printer from Pendleton.  Widow in 1881.

1893 Died, buried Prestwich (near Salford), aged 83

In 1850, Elizabeth was born at Hooley Bridge (and Grace at Gigg in 1851).

In 1851, Joseph and Sarah (21 & 24) were at Heap, Bury with daughters Elizabeth (1) and Grace (2mo)

By 1871, the family had more daughters and were living in Yorkshire.  They had a son Jushaw, but there is no birth registered for any male son.  He must have been adopted.

James was a Fuller when Henry, James, Elizabeth, Joseph and Alice were baptised.

n 1841, James (Fuller and Lodging House) and Betty (45 & 49) were at Wylde, South Bury. They had Ann (20), Samuel (19), Elizha (7), Joseph (4), and Alice (1).  They also has 11 (assumed) lodgers.

In 1851, James, a Fuller, and Betty (53 & 61) were at Moss Street, South Bury with Elizabeth (16), Joseph (13), Alice (11) and grandaughter Mary (2). They had 5 lodgers inc John Mather (53, Wid), a commercial) traveller.

In 1861, James (65) is a widower, living with his son Joseph and his wife Ann

In 1867, James died in South Bury, aged 71.
1792 Betty Farnworth or Final The 1840 birth registration for Alice rerveals Betty's maiden name as Farnworth. However, there appears to be no marriage except for Betty Final. 1834 Elizabeth (Elisha) Mather 24 Mar 1855, Henry Withington (34) a Tailor from Bury, son of Samuel Withington maried a much younger Elizabeth Mather (20) daughter of James Mather a Fuller at St Mary the Virgin, Bury. 1837 Joseph Mather In 1861, Joseph and Annie (23 & 25) were at 58 Georgina Street, Bury with daughter Annie (3mo) and Elizabeth Briggs (21, mar, visitor) from Bedford, Bedfordshire.  He is also with his father James. 1840 Alice Mather 26 Dec 1866, John Hamer (24) a Miner from Elton (North
Bury), son of William Hamer, also a Miner married Alice Mather (26) a Servant at the Star Inn Heywood, daughter of James Mather, a Woolen Fuller at St Luke, Heywood.

15 Jan 1857, Susannah (known as Susey) married Robert Ashworth, both from Hooley Bridge. 

In 1861, Susey (28) and Robert (27) were with Susy's mother at Britle.
1833 Betty Mather 20 Aug 1855, Betty (aged 22) married Henry Wood 1836 Richard Mather 1839 - 1899 Christopher Mather 59 59 1818 John J Schofield 29 Apr 1840, before they were married, Judith Mather of Pigslee had twins Alice and Judith Mather by John Schofield of Deeply Vale.  They were baptised the same day at Christ Church, Walmersley.

3 Oct 1841 John and Judith were married at Rochdale.  They do not appear to have had any more children (in Lancashire).

In 1851, John and Lucy were at Foundary Street, Haep with daughter Sarah (8).

In 1861 John and Judah (43 & 49) were at Heywood with daughter Sarah (17).

In 1871, John and Judith (53 & 59) were at Heywood with daughter Sarah Schofield (27) and granddaughter Mary Ann Schofield (3)

1810 to 1816, Joseph a "Weaver of Levenshulme" and Hannah had four children baptised at Heaton Norris.

In 1841, Joseph (70) was at Cross Hall, Wlamersley, Bury, living with John and Sarah Walton (both 30) nee Mather and family.

In 1862, Lionel was baptised at Bury.

After Lionel was born, the family moved to Belfast (before the Titanic was built).  Martha (b.1865), Edwin (b.1866), Grace (b.1870), Sarah (b.1873) were all born in Belfast.

They returned to Bury about 1876 and Fred (b.1877) and John (b.1880) were both born in Bury.

21 Oct 1899 John died and oldest son Lionel was his executor.

1861 Sarah Ann Hill Oct 1879, Sarah Ann Hill, spinster, had Mary Hannah Hill Baptised at Bury Holy Trinity.  She married Lionel Mather the following year. 1880 Mary Hannah Hill (Mather) 1836 Annie Lilly Annie LILLY (births) or LILLEY (marriage).

31 May 1860, Ann Lilly (24) married daughter of James Lilly a mechanic married Joseph Mather (22).
