George was born in 1829 in Little Bolton.¹

George's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Mather. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Happy Lomax; his maternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Holt. He had seven brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Isaac, William, James, John, Lomas, Samuel, James, Mary, Alice, Happy, Ellen, Maria and <child>. He was the twelfth oldest of the fourteen children. He died at the age of 77 on June 2nd, 1906 in Bolton. His burial was on June 6th, 1906 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²³

- George was the last of his family to be buried. In the same grave was his mother Alice, both wives and two of the children.

  There may be an error with the daye of death, as it is clearly 2 June on the headstone, and probate 6 July may still be correct.

- In 1841, George was living at Waterloo, Little Bolton (age 13).
  
  In 1851 he was still with parents and sister Happy and her daughter Maria Barrow.
  
  Recorded as b.1829 and married to Mary in 1871 census.
  
  Living at Walmesley (Walmsley), Turton, Lancashire in 1891, or is this the other George Mather from Bury? There is another George, son of Samuel and Ellen who was christened in Bolton in 1829.
