William was born in 1811 in Sharples and his christening took place on July 21st, 1811 in Eccles.1 2  William's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Happy Lomax; his maternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Holt. He had seven brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Isaac, James, John, Lomas, Samuel, George, James, Mary, Alice, Happy, Ellen, Maria and <child>.  He was the second oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 22 in December 1833 in Sharples.  His burial was on December 8th, 1833 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3
