General Notes
NOTE: There was another Happy Lomax (1786-1799) of Breightmet, buried at Cockey. This may Happy's illegitimate daughter.
In 1790, Happy was about 22 when she married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.
When aged about 43, Happy was on the 1811 Little Bolton Poor List, living at Blackburn Street. This was the year that her husband James Mather died. Her grandson John (and Ellen nee Buckley) were living in Blackburn Street in 1841.
Happy married 3 times, but with such a unique name, she is easy to trace. Her granddaughter (and several other realtives) was also named Happy.
In 1841, Happy Cheeetham (aged ~70) was living with Ann Boardman (aged 75), in the Alms House, Little Bolton, an OAP's home for widows and spinsters, and there were 11 old women in the same residence.
The death certificate doesn't give any clues of her previous marriages, except to tell us that William Cheetham was a weaver.
25 Jun 1843, Happy Cheetham was buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton with her son Samuel Mather (who died in 1854).
-
Whereabouts
-
Happy lived at
Blackburn Street for thirty years from 1811 to after 1841.

Happy Mather was recorded at Blackburn St in the 1811 L.B. Poor Rates Book, so presumably James had just died when Happy got recorded (as head of household). Home of John, Ellen and Son Joseph in 1841.
She lived in
Little Bolton from 1841.

Occupancy/Contact Notes

JAMES WALKER and HAPPY LOMAX are also indexed (same date), but is probably an error (Walker looks like Mather when written). However, this record shows James born about 1765 and Happy about 1769
They had two sons and three daughters, named
Samuel,
James,
Maria,
Maria and
Nancy. There are no more children.

The Death certificate of 1-May-1854 confirms this is the correct date. Samuel died at 4 Simpson St. of Apoplexy Certified. The Death was registered by Harry (i.e Happy, his daughter) Shuttleworth in Attendance, Rose Hill, Great Bolton.
Note: Apoplexy is an old-fashioned medical term, which can be used to mean a neurological impairment, haemorrhage or stroke.
Samuel died before the two Bolton cemeteries (Tonge and Heaton).opened so he must be buried in a churchyard, possibly the Parish church of St Peter’s. However, it seems odd that a space was not left for Alice, who was buried with her son George.
