Samuel was born in April 1791 in Bolton and his christening took place on April 24th, 1791 at St. Peter's (Bolton) conducted by minister Chris Hopper.1 2  Samuel's father was James Mather and his mother was Happy Lomax.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth; his maternal grandparents were James Lomax and Mary Taylor. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Maria, Maria and Nancy.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Elizabeth.  He died from a stroke, Apoplexy Certified, at the age of 63 on May 1st, 1854 at 4 Simpson Street.  He was buried on May 2nd, 1854 at Ridgway Gates Wesleyan.3 4

‌Samuel and Alice were married in a commitment ceremony on July 15th, 1810 in Bolton.6  They were also married in a religious ceremony on September 9th, 1810 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by Curate Thomas McDougal and witnessed by William Orrell and James Orrell.7  They had eight sons and five daughters, and also a child of unknown gender, named Isaac, William, James, John, Lomas, Samuel, George, James, Mary, Alice, Happy, Ellen, Maria and <child>.  There are no more children.
