Maria's father was James Mather and her mother was Happy Lomax. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth; her maternal grandparents were James Lomax and Mary Taylor. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, James, Maria and Nancy. She was the second oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Elizabeth. She died due to a childhood disease about 1793.
