James was born in February 1797 in Bolton and his baptism took place on July 2nd, 1797 at Ridgway Gates Wesleyan conducted by minister Chris Hopper.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Happy Lomax.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth; his maternal grandparents were James Lomax and Mary Taylor. He had a brother and three sisters, named Samuel, Maria, Maria and Nancy.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 67 on July 3rd, 1864 in Bolton.2
