James was born on September 28th, 1761 in Turton and his baptism took place on November 2nd, 1761 at Bank Street Unitarian conducted by Reverend Philip Holland.¹²

  This is the most likely, as future wife Happy Lomax was also Christened at Bank Street Unitarian. Although the James and Susannah baptisms dont align with the others, there is only one James and Ann family in Bolton district, so it seems Isaac was baptised late (after the marriage).

James' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann Howarth. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Blinstone; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, Solomon, Richard, Susanna, Susan, Nancy, Ann and Alice. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 50 in October 1811 in Little Bolton. His burial was on October 20th, 1811 in Bridge Street Chapel (Methodist).³⁴

- May have died between 1798 and 1815, as Happy married again in 1816. Most probably about 1814, but its a guess!

  A James Mather Cash receipt for £2-2-0 for a grave no. 7-29 is recorded in 20-Oct-1811 in the Register of Burials at Bridge Street Wesleyan Chapel at Little Bolton in the parish of Bolton le Moors, Lancashire from 1810 to 1837.

  Happy Mather is listed in the L.B. Poor Book for 1811, which is consistant with Samuel dying in 1811. She was a rate and tax payer, with 2s 9d rate collected for a House in Blackburn Street and not on the poor recipient list.
  
  There is another burial record for a James Mather, 54 in Wigan 28 June 1814, but the Bolton record is more likely.

General Notes
- James Mather and Happy Lomax were Samuel's parents, but which James?. James (b.1769) son of James; or James (b.1761) son of Richard and Ann; or James (b.1763) son of Elias and Mary ... or another? James son of Richard fits well, both parents using Bank Street and Isaac being the first sons of Richard and Samuel.
  
  James probably lived at Toppings, Turton (unconfirmed, based on brothers Isaac and Solomon.
  
  James was 29 when he married Happy. He may have been married before, quite possibly to Betty Lyon who died in 1789, aged only 20. James had 1 or 2 young children to care for and needed a wife quickly. James signed his own name on both marriages, although the signatures are not a good match at least he was educatred and sign his name (5 years apart).
  
  James and his future wife Happy were both baptised at Bank Street, Bolton although James was from Turton. Richard and Ann Mather had only been married a few months, so this may be why!
  
  In 1799, James and Happy were living in Ainsworth (Hainsworth) when daughter Nanny was baptised. This is about 2 miles SE of Harwood.

    - Happy Mather was recorded at Blackburn St in the 1811 L.B. Poor Rates Book, so presumably James had just died when Happy got recorded (as head of household). Home of John, Ellen and Son Joseph in 1841.
