James was born on September 28th, 1761 in Turton and his baptism took place on November 2nd, 1761 at Bank Street Unitarian conducted by Reverend Philip Holland.1 2  James' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, Solomon, Richard, Susanna, Susan, Nancy, Ann and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 50 in October 1811 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on October 20th, 1811 in Little Bolton.3 4

‌James and Betty were married in a religious ceremony on September 7th, 1785 at St. Peter's (Bolton) witnessed by Thomas Rothwell & John Ridgway.6  They had a son and a daughter, named James and Elizabeth.  There are no more children.

‌James and Happy were married in a religious ceremony on January 1st, 1790 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by J Folds and witnessed by William Orrell & Richard Mangnall.6  They had two sons and three daughters, named Samuel, James, Maria, Maria and Nancy.  There are no more children.
