Individual Picture Notes
- One of the first pages of the Walmsley Chapel Meeting House (Presbyterian) is dominated by two Mather families, William+Ann and Peter+Ellin. These two families were to be the grandparents of Samuel Mather (1791-1854) and Alice Mather (1792-1879) who married 9 September 1810. Therefore Samuel and Alice (the parents of John Mather) were second cousins.

Richard was born in 1777 in Turton and his baptism took place on April 30th, 1777 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.¹

Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann Howarth. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Blinstone; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, James, Solomon, Susanna, Susan, Nancy, Ann and Alice. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 74 on August 31st, 1851 in Baltimore County. His burial was on September 4th, 1851.

General Notes
- Richard was a Baptist. He was married by John Lutener (a Baptist Minister).
  
  Richard, like his father, is a weaver, but a labourer in 1846 when Henry married Sarah.
  
  Richard and Hannah were living at Raikes (Rakes), Harwood from 1811 to probably 1830 when Ann and sons Richard and John were baptised. The 1851 census shows that Richard's first son Nathaniel's daughter Hannah (i.e. his grandaughter) was born at Harwood Lee in 1830.
  
  In 1836, John Howarth, John Haslam and William Knowles are registered (Poll Book) at Raikes.
  
  In 1841, Mary Heaton (60) and George Holt (20) were at "Raikes" (a farm on the Tottington Road). This is the same place! Richard (60, Ag Lab) was at Dandy Row with sons John (20), James (15) and (possibly adopted son) Thomas (18 or 12 or 8). Hannah had died in 1839.
  
  In Aug 1844, Solomon Mather, Richard's brother died at Old Ellen's (aka Old Nells). The informant was Richard Mather, Occupier present at the death at Old Ellen's, Sharples..
  
  Richard travelled to the US with his son John in 1848, and died there in 1851.

- From 1800 to 1837 Richard's occupation was Weaver in manufacturing in Sharples.

    - A weaver when married Hannah, and also a weaver when son Richard married Elizabeth Roper in 1837.
  From 1841 his occupation was Agracultural Labourer in agriculture in Astley Bridge.
  - Occupation Notes
    - Richard, aged 60 was an "Ag Lab", i.e. a farm labourer in 1841 at Dandy Row, Astley Bridge Sharples.
  From 1854 his occupation was Labourer in Baltimore County.

    - Father described as a labourer in 1854 when son Richard (in L.B.) remarried.

- Richard lived in Raikes for twenty years from 1810 to about 1830.²

    - Richard and Hannah Mather and family were living at Raikes (farm) in the early 1800s. “Harwood” was shown as the abode on Ann’s baptism (1811), and “Rakes, Harwood” on Richards (1815) and John’s (1816). Then simply “Harwood” again for Henry (1819), James (1821) and Peter (1823). Also, son Nathaniel’s wife Nancy Bromiley died in Dec 1822 and is buried here and first three children born at Harwood (or Harwood Lee on Hannah’s 1851 census, born 1830). The family had moved by 1841.
  He lived in Astley Bridge from 1841.³

    - Richard went to live with his son William in Baltimore. In 1850 (US census), Wlliam (42) was an Inn Keeper in Baltimore with wife Ellen (38), Samuel (5), Nathanial (3), and his father Richard (73) from England.
  John Kershaw was a representative of Richard.
  - Relationship Notes
    - In 1800, John Kershaw was witness to Richard Mather's marriage.
      It may be this John from Goos cote Hill, who would have been about 16.
  He lived with William Rosthorn.
