Richard was born in 1777 in Turton and his baptism took place on April 30th, 1777 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.1  Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, James, Solomon, Susanna, Susan, Nancy, Ann and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 74 on August 31st, 1851 in Baltimore County.  He was buried on September 4th, 1851.

‌Richard and Hannah were married in a religious ceremony on January 8th, 1800 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by minister John Lutener (Baptist Minister) and witnessed by John Kershaw & William Orrell.2  They had eight biological sons and three biological daughters, named Nathan, William, Robert, Richard, John, Henry, James, Peter, Rachel, Catherine and Ann.  They also had an adopted son named Thomas.
