- One of the first pages of the Walmsley Chapel Meeting House (Presbyterian) is dominated by two Mather families, William+Ann and Peter+Ellin. These two families were to be the grandparents of Samuel Mather (1791-1854) and Alice Mather (1792-1879) who married 9 September 1810. Therefore Samuel and Alice (the parents of John Mather) were second cousins.

Susan was born in 1766 in Turton and her baptism took place on September 12th, 1766 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.¹

Susan's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ann Howarth. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Blinstone; her maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, James, Solomon, Richard, Susanna, Nancy, Ann and Alice. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 87 in 1853 in Turton. Her burial was on March 27th, 1853 in Turton.¹²

  There is no civil registration for the Death of Susan Mather or Susan Smith. The closest match is a Susan Nutter, Bolton (Ref: 8c,224). Also, there is no Susan Mather in the 1841 or 1851 Bolton Census.
  
  This burial record is for Susan Nutter, or the record has been incorectly indexed. There is no civil record for Susan Mather, and Susan Nutter was on the 1841 census, aged 70 at Holcombe, Bury.

General Notes
- It is likely Susan and Susannah Mather are the same parson and was baptised twice (but why wasnt Isaac?). This is because there is no death record for the Susanna baptised 1763, and Susan was also knows as Susanna when her children were baptised (Smith).
  
  Susan Mather married Richard Smith of Deane on 7 Oct 1787. She was Susan when Thomas baptised (1797), but then Susannah for Richard (1799).
  
  In 1841, Susan Nutter, aged 70, was at Tottington Lower End. Is this her?
  
  There is also a burial record for Susan Mather at Turton, 27 Mar 1853, aged 83, which could be her if she hadn't married. The death record is for a Susan Nutter, aged 83, so Mather could be her maiden name. Susan Nutter was witness to the 1816 marriage of William Mather and Catherine Pilkington. However, this may be Sussanah Greenhalgh who married William Nutter in 1791.
