Individual Picture Notes
- One of the first pages of the Walmsley Chapel Meeting House (Presbyterian) is dominated by two Mather families, William+Ann and Peter+Ellin. These two families were to be the grandparents of Samuel Mather (1791-1854) and Alice Mather (1792-1879) who married 9 September 1810. Therefore Samuel and Alice (the parents of John Mather) were second cousins.

Solomon was born in 1768 in Turton and his baptism took place on November 5th, 1768 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.¹

Solomon's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Ann Howarth. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Blinstone; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, James, Richard, Susanna, Susan, Nancy, Ann and Alice. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died due to natural causes or old age, Fits, at the age of 76 on November 30th, 1844 in Sharples.²

  Death Certificate:
  Solomon died of "Fits" 30th Nov 1844 at Old Ellen's, Sharples aged 76. His occupation was "Husband of Martha Mather, Hand-Loom Weaver".
  The informant was Richard Mather, Occupier present at the death at Old Ellen's, Sharples.
  Note: In 1841, Solomon (aged 70) was living at "Old Nells" with his toung daughter Ann (aged 25). This is probably the same place.

General Notes
- Like his father, Solomon was a weaver. He married Martha Ramsden 20 OCt 1790. It was another Solomon of Edgworth that married Mary Grime 9-Aug-1809 at Bolton.
  
  In 1790, Solomon married Marha Ramsden (Matty) and had Betty and James baptised at Walmsley (1791 & 1792). For 14 years, Births and Baptism are missing until 1806 when Joseph was baptised.
  
  From 1800 Solomon lived at Hall-i’th’-Wood. His son Solomon was born there about 1800, and daughter Catherine and Ann were born there 1809-1813 (see 1871 census).
  
  In 1841, Solomon Mather was still alive at Old Nells, Little Bolton (not Old Nells, Turton), a hand loom weaver with his daughter Ann (25).
  
  30 Nov 1844 Solomon died. His death was reported in the newspaper on 7 Dec 1844. The death certificate (attached) shows he died of "Fits" at Old Ellen's, Sharples aged 76. Old Ellen's and Old Nell's are probably the same place (Nell is a pet name for Ellen).
  
  In 1851 he was a neighbour of Joseph (of Tong) and Mary Mather and family (James, Joseph, Ellen, Ann & Jane). Joseph was his first son.
