Alice was born in 1779 in Turton and her baptism took place on May 1st, 1779 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.1  Alice's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ann Howarth.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; her maternal grandparents were Edmund Howarth and Anne. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, James, Solomon, Richard, Susanna, Susan, Nancy and Ann.  She was the youngest of the nine children.

‌Alice and John were married in a religious ceremony on October 14th, 1805 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by Vicar Thomas Bancroft and witnessed by Richard Dickinson & William Orrell.2   They had three daughters, and also a child of unknown gender named Ann, Mary, Sarah and <unknown>.  There are possibly more children.
