Ellen was born in 1756 in Heaton Park and her baptism took place on January 25th, 1756 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Ellen's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Mather. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, James, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane and Nancy.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
