Mary was born in 1745 in Heaton Park and her baptism took place on October 8th, 1745 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Mather. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, James, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ellen, Jane and Nancy.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
