Jane was born in 1757 in Heaton Park and her baptism took place on November 20th, 1757 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Jane's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Mather. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, James, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ellen and Nancy.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
