Charles was born in 1747 in Heaton Park and his baptism took place on August 2nd, 1747 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Charles' father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Mather. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, James, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ellen, Jane and Nancy.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
