William was born in 1752 in Heaton Park and his baptism took place on July 25th, 1752 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Mather. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Charles, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ellen, Jane and Nancy.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
