John was born in 1744 in Heaton Park and his baptism took place on March 27th, 1744 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Mather. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Charles, James, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ellen, Jane and Nancy.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
