Selina was born in March 1850 in Hindley and her baptism took place there on April 21st, 1850.1 2  Selina's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Ingram.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Barlow. She had a brother and five sisters, named John, Ellen, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
