Elizabeth was born in June 1858 in Hindley.1  Elizabeth's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Ingram.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Barlow. She had a brother and five sisters, named John, Ellen, Selina, Martha, Sarah and Margaret.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
