Margaret was born on April 25th, 1861 in Hindley and her baptism took place on January 3rd, 1864 in Wigan.1 2  Margaret's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Jane Ingram.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Barlow. She had a brother and five sisters, named John, Ellen, Selina, Martha, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
