John was born in June 1854 in Hindley.1  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Jane Ingram.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Barlow. He had six sisters named Ellen, Selina, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
